Enhanced pharmacist experience on the NHS England initiative

University of Manchester and ICF International have published a report on the NHS England’s Pathfinder Independent Pharmacist Prescriber programme, which highlights that pharmacists who participated found a significant increase in job satisfaction. 

“This report reinforces what we believe deeply: when clinicians are empowered with the right digital tools and the right governance, their ability to deliver care is transformed. The Pathfinder programme has shown that independent prescribing in community pharmacy is not only viable, but pivotal to a modern, resilient NHS,” said David Brown, managing director at CLEO Systems. 

The aim of the Pathfinder programme was to develop a framework for independent prescribing for patients in primary care, anticipating the situation in September, when all newly qualified pharmacists will be registered as independent prescribers. It is the first programme to fund community pharmacy to prescribe for NHS services. 

Since 2024, the team at CLEO Systems has worked with NHS England to roll out CLEO EPS – a stand-alone electronic prescribing solution across community pharmacies in England, enabling pharmacists in the community to prescribe for minor illnesses, long-term conditions and novel illnesses. 

Around 190 pharmacies across England are live and using CLEO to prescribe for patients.

Electiva announces flagship London hospital 

Electiva Healthcare has said that it will open a new hospital in London in the summer. The Electiva London Hospital is a purpose-built development in South-West London on the banks of the River Thames.

The hospital will become Electiva’s flagship site, combining patient-first healthcare with a luxurious experience. It will house two fully equipped surgical theatres. Patients will stay in one of ten bedroom suites. Each detail has been planned for maximum convenience and flexibility with accessibility by road, river and air, with the option to arrive via helicopter transfer, supporting efficient travel in and out of London.

The group says that the Electiva London Hospital is expected to generate a revenue in excess of £50 million each year and create around 300 new jobs in the area. 

“This project shows our team and our surgeons that we are pushing boundaries in healthcare capability and technology, built with care and attention to detail,” said Sayani Sainudeen, executive chair of Electiva Healthcare.

“Our mantra, We Care More, applies just as much to our surgeons as it does to our patients, and we encourage surgeons to reach out to us ahead of time.”

In a statement, the group said that further acquisitions and developments are planned over the next year.

Psyomics launches digital tool for neurodiversity 

Psyomics has launched a new digital tool for neurodiversity that supports NHS services in the demand for neurodevelopmental referrals and backlogs.

Developed in collaboration with Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) and informed by engagement with more than 15 NHS providers, the platform has been tailored to meet the needs of specialists working in this area, helping NHS triage with service user reports, supporting a more productive workforce and offer a more streamlined service user experience.

Specifically designed for people with autism, ADHD, and those requiring dual assessments, the tool streamlines services by reducing manual data collection and providing real-time insights into waiting lists. It supports ongoing validation to identify out-of-area referrals or people already assessed elsewhere, improving efficiency and transparency, while helping clinicians focus more time on patient care.

Created alongside MPFT’s clinical team, the platform integrates with existing NHS systems, giving clinicians the right information at the right time whilst reducing administrative burden. Early modelling suggests a potential reduction of up to 30% in clinical time by eliminating repetitive low-value activities, which are often a significant source of frustration for service providers.

“The technology ensures biopsychosocial information is captured seamlessly wherever a person enters the pathway and carried with them throughout their journey. Crucially, it can scale across Integrated Care Boards and regions, helping services grow and adapt to rising national demand,” said Melinda Rees, chief executive of Psyomics. 

Corpora.ai supports blood cancer research with AI

MSTART, the medical and sporting technology research trust founded by Mel Morris, is funding the University of Warwick and Accelerated Clinical Trials (ACT) to accelerate research and clinical trials for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). 

The partnership will be supported by Morris’ software firm Corpora.ai, which will assist in progressing research and data infrastructure.

Corpora.ai will use its AI technology to enhance the national AML patient registry, delivering faster, data-driven insights for researchers and clinicians. By analysing clinical literature, biomarkers, and treatment pathways at speed, the platform plans to help develop earlier diagnosis models, optimise trial design, and identify predictive biomarkers.

MSTART’s philanthropic support reflects its mission to translate emerging technologies into real-world impact. Its funding will allow for expanding clinical trial capacity, accelerating trial delivery and supporting patient engagement.

The University of Warwick will launch new data science scholarships to train researchers in secure database design and machine learning. ACT, founded by Professor Charles Craddock CBE, will continue leading blood cancer clinical trials across the UK, providing access to over 27 NHS-embedded research centres.

BridgeBio inks managed services contract with Calitii

Global IT consultancy Calitii has secured a contract with biopharmaceutical company BridgeBio to provide comprehensive managed services via its ServiceNow platform.

The partnership builds on the greenfield IT service management implementation Calitii carried out last year to the day-to-day management, proactive maintenance, and continuous optimisation of BridgeBio’s ServiceNow platform. 

Under the terms of the agreement, Calitii will act as a strategic extension of BridgeBio’s internal IT team. By providing a fully managed service, Calitii will ensure the ServiceNow platform remains agile, secure, and aligned with BridgeBio’s evolving business needs.

Worcestershire goes live with ePMA software

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has gone live with Altera Digital Health’s ePrescribing and Medicine Administration (ePMA) software. 

Disparate and paper-based workflows have been digitised and standardised across 56 inpatient wards and urgent care areas spanning the trust’s three hospital sites. 

This is the latest phase in the Trust’s integrated enterprise resource planning programme.

“This latest ePMA go-live is an important step on our digital maturity journey,” said Harry de Voil, the Trust’s chief information officer for allied health and nursing 

“Not only is it key to driving efficiency, quality and patient flow improvements, but it is also a key enabler for other aspects of our EPR and patient safety enhancements further on in the journey, such as closed-loop e-prescribing,” he continued. 

The system has streamlined the electronic discharge process by ensuring discharge medication orders are immediately available for dispensing, helping to avoid delays resulting from the transfer of the paper medication chart from ward to pharmacy. 

For the clinicians, it is saving time producing electronic discharge summaries (EDS) for primary and community care providers. Before the Trust went live with the software, teams had to transcribe the prescriptions into the EDS manually. But now, the information is automatically pulled across from the solution, enhancing patient safety, improving patient flow and enabling clinicians to focus more on direct care. Clinical decision support and alerts, such as allergy and interaction warnings, have been introduced based on the patient’s record and the medication being ordered, which is designed to support patient safety, reduce medication errors and improve adherence to evidence-based guidelines. 

The system is also designed to eliminate patient safety risks and inefficiencies associated with handwritten drug charts being lost, illegible or transcribed incorrectly. Further efficiencies are being released on the wards with instant access to the complete patient’s record and easier identification of missed doses to ensure timely care. The solution also incorporates a decision-support tool for prescribing, adding further enhancements for patient safety.
