One of Britain’s largest charities has taken a stake in the virtual cancer clinic which will now expand its services to more workplaces and insurance providers.

Macmillan Cancer Support has taken a stake in virtual cancer clinic Perci Health. Financial terms have not been disclosed but it is understood to be a six-figure sum.

Macmillan’s investment into Perci Health is the latest development in the charity’s ongoing work to explore emerging new cancer care technologies and approaches. The Macmillan Innovation Impact Investment Portfolio was set up to invest £3.5 million until the end of 2025 in start-up businesses that are developing cancer care products and technology. Its portfolio companies include 52 North which has developed a portable medical device that assesses patients’ risk of neutropenic sepsis; prostate cancer detection platform Lucida Medical; and radiotherapy technology company Leo Cancer Care.

“Perci Health’s holistic, multidisciplinary approach is exactly the exciting innovation that is needed, and it aligns perfectly with Macmillan’s ambitions to help more people get the personalised care they need,” said Claire Taylor, chief nursing officer of Macmillan Cancer Support.

As a result of the investment, Perci Health aims to expand its services to more workplaces and insurance providers and aims to eventually look at extending the reach of its virtual clinic model by working in partnership with statutory health systems across the UK.

Support across the continuum

Perci Health’s fully integrated, multidisciplinary model is already being made available to more than 500,000 people for free should they need it through partnerships with their employers and insurers.

It offers support across what the company calls “the entire cancer continuum”, from prevention and early detection to treatment support, rehabilitation and return-to-work services.

Personalised programmes of cancer care are provided to individuals impacted by cancer and their loved ones, through a virtual cancer clinic platform that connects members to a broad team of more than 85 NHS trained cancer specialists across 17 disciplines, including cancer nursing, psycho-oncology, physiotherapy, dietetics, lymphoedema, genetic counselling and much more.

All Perci Health members are assigned a dedicated nurse specialist who, after an assessment of the member’s health status and goals, creates a personalised care plan and puts together a bespoke rehabilitation team.

This model is designed to improve access to care and reduce healthcare costs by ensuring the right healthcare professional or evidence-based intervention is given at the right time and to allow members to self-manage their condition.
