The location of three new cancer centre sites has been chosen based on several factors including the lack of provision of radiation therapy in these regions.

Healthcare charity Nuffield Health and cancer care provider Icon Group are expanding their partnership with plans to develop three new cancer centre sites alongside Nuffield Health hospitals in Brighton, Derby, and Warwickshire.

Icon will provide radiation oncology services alongside Nuffield Health’s existing cancer care.

The locations for the new centres were chosen based on several factors including the lack of provision of radiation therapy in these regions and the need to reduce travel and wait times for cancer treatment.

“These local centres will provide greater choice and alleviate pressure from the NHS, ensuring more people can access care when and where they need,” said Aldo Rolfo, chief executive of Icon Europe.

Icon and Nuffield Health said that the same model used at the existing partnership at Icon Cancer Centre London, next to Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital will be used in these new centres.

“There is a significant underutilisation of radiotherapy in the UK, with fewer than 30% of cancer patients receiving it, less than the recommended rate of 40%,” said Mark Middleton chief executive of Icon Group.
