Bupa Health Services acquires its first British hospital since 2008, while Bupa UK Insurance has agreed a new multi-year contract with Cleveland Clinic in London.

International healthcare group Bupa has acquired its first British hospital since 2008, while its insurance arm has signed a new multi-year contract with Cleveland Clinic in London.

The group has agreed terms to acquire New Victoria Hospital, an independent private hospital in Kingston upon Thames.

Financial terms have not been disclosed, but the acquisition is anticipated to complete by the end of the summer.

New Victoria Hospital has 33 beds and specialises in orthopaedics, gynaecology, general surgery and gastroenterology and has state-of-the-art facilities, including 128 slice CT scanning facility, fluoroscopy room and a 1.5-tonne MRI.

It operates what Bupa calls a “thriving” outpatient and diagnostics department, which provides patients with access to advanced imaging, a cardiac diagnostic facility and a comprehensive endoscopy service. The hospital also features three new operating theatres.

“We’re delighted to be acquiring New Victoria Hospital and expanding our hospital services further across London,” said Sarah Melia, general manager for Bupa Health Services.

Bupa Health Services currently operates 88 health clinics across the UK.

Healthcare pilot

Elsewhere, Bupa UK Insurance has agreed a new multi-year contract with Cleveland Clinic in London.

The agreement includes a first-of-its-kind value-based healthcare pilot and a no-shortfall guarantee for consultant fees. This means that Bupa patients won’t face any extra bills from consultants, even if they’re higher than the patient’s health cover allowance.

“Value-based healthcare represents a promising and growing shift in healthcare delivery,” explained Richard Washington, general manager for healthcare at Bupa UK Insurance.

“It puts the focus on the quality of care provided and patient outcomes while encouraging greater coordination and collaboration between health insurers and providers,” he continued.

Bupa UK Insurance provides health and dental cover to more than 4 million people. Bupa Global is the premium health insurance arm of Bupa.

In early May, the group announced that it would open 70 mental health centres across the UK in response to increasing demand for workplace mental health support.
